MBC production on Umar (rad)

Assalamu alaikum dear sisters and brothers. Here is the series link promised, and a brief blurb about it taken from the longer post here

The series is about Umar, one of the prophet’s (peace be upon him) closest companions who at one time, wanted to kill him! He outlived the prophet (peace be upon him) by many years, and he lead the Muslim nation for much of that time. He died as he wished to die, martyred… it was also the first of many assassinations of the state’s head, the Muslim nation was to face. It is in 30 parts and I will post the first one below. You can youtube them all. It is a vast period in history to cover in 30 episodes and there is much to be commented on. But I don’t personally prefer to critique what is obviously a massive amount of work, except to say thanks for taking it on, thanks for the effort to make it as best as possible, and thanks for sharing it. So while there may be much to be improved upon, and much that has been left out or needs working on, it is a remarkable production and one of the most accurate ones out there in my amateur opinion.

Reliance on Allah: The Cure For An Ummah in Crisis – By Abdal Hakim Murad

Assalamu alaikum warahmatullah wabarakatuh!

This lecture mashaAllah is very timely and a benefit to all who listen inshaAllah. It addresses many areas, such as, the state of our Ummah today and why we should not be anything but content and important aspects of destiny that we have forgotten and are hard to express. With relation to our discussion of destiny on Saturday, I thought it would be especially a good listen.

Jazakum Allah Khairan

Alhamdulillah, nasheed by Dawud Wharnsby

MashaAllah we had a great session last Saturday, furthering our reading of Surah Al-Baqara. We covered the important story of the ‘heifer’ (small cow) that the sura is said to take it’s name from. A story full of lessons and depth, found in ayaath 59-74 of Sura Baqara.

During our discussion it came about that we mentioned this song by Dawud Wharnsby, referencing the fact that it was only the human who wanted free will, while all other creation (i.e., rocks, trees etc) chose not to have free will and spend their life in simple perfect worship. A worship manifested by them being what they are meant to be. I promised to post the song on the blog so here it is mashaAllah 🙂

Ramadan khutbah from our beloved Prophet (sallalahu alaihi wasalam)

Assalamu alaikum warahmatullah,

Below is the text of a sermon reported to have been delivered by our beloved prophet (sallaalahu alaihi wasalam) on the subject of Ramadan. It is not recorded in the sihah sittha (the six most authentic books of hadith) however. There is also a text with slight difference given by another chain of narration at this website as well (Shi’i school).

. I am not sure how ‘hasan’ the chains/narration/hadith is considered, but the text of it is good and to my understanding it is that what enjoins us to good is acceptable even if the ‘isnad’ is not sound. And Allah knows best.

Ramadan Kareem to all of you!

The Prophet’s Sermon on Ramadhan

Baihaqi reported on the authority of Salman Al-Farsi (Radhi Allah ‘Anh) that Prophet (‘Alaihi Salat was-Salam) delivered a sermon on the last day of the month of Sha’ban. In it he (‘Alaihi Salat was-Salam) said ,

“O People! The month of Allah (Ramadan) has come with its mercies , blessings and forgivenesses. Allah has decreed this month the best of all months. The days of this month are the best among the days and the nights are the best among the nights and the hours during Ramadan are the best among the hours. This is a month in which you have been invited by Him (to fast and pray). Allah has honoured you in it. In every breath you take is a reward of Allah , your sleep is worship , your good deeds are accepted and your invocations are answered.

Therefore , you must invoke your Lord in all earnestness with hearts free from sin and evil , and pray that Allah may help you to keep fast , and to recite the Holy Qur’an. Indeed! , miserable is the one who is deprived of Allah’s forgiveness in this great month. While fasting remember the hunger and thirst on the Day of Judgement. Give alms to the poor and needy. Pay respect to your elders , have sympathy for your youngsters and be kind towards your relatives and kinsmen. Guard your tongue against unworthy words , and your eyes from scenes that are not worth seeing (forbidden) and your ears from sounds that should not be heard.

Be kind to orphans so that if your children may become orphans they will also be treated with kindness. Do repent to Allah for your sins and supplicate with raised hands at the times of prayer as these are the best times , during which Allah Almighty looks at His servants with mercy. Allah Answers if they supplicate , Responds if they call , Grants if He is asked , and Accepts if they entreat. O people! you have made your conscience the slave of your desires.

Make it free by invoking Allah for forgiveness. Your back may break from the heavy load of your sins , so prostrate yourself before Allah for long intervals , and make this load lighter. Understand fully that Allah has promised in His Honour and Majesty that , people who perform salat and sajda (prostration) will be guarded from Hell-fire on the Day of Judgement.

O people! , if anyone amongst you arranges for iftar (meal at sunset) for any believer , Allah will reward him as if he had freed a slave , and Allah will forgive him his sins. A companion asked: “but not all of us have the means to do so” The Prophet (SAAWS) replied: Keep yourself away from Hell-fire though it may consist of half a date or even some water if you have nothing else.

O people! , anyone who during this month cultivates good manners , will walk over the Sirat (bridge to Paradise ) on the day when feet will tend to slip. For anyone who during this month eases the workload of his servants , Allah will make easy his accounting , and for anyone who doesn’t hurt others during this month , Allah will safeguard him from His Wrath on the Day of Judgement. Anyone who respects and treats an orphan with kindness during this month , Allah shall look at him with kindness on that Day. Anyone who treats his kinsmen well during this month , Allah will bestow His Mercy on him on that Day , while anyone who mistreats his kinsmen during this month , Allah will keep away from His Mercy.

Whomever offers the recommended prayers during this month , Allah will save him from Hell , and whomever observes his obligations during this month , his reward will be seventy times the reward during other months. Whomever repeatedly invokes Allah’s blessings on me , Allah will keep his scale of good deeds heavy , while the scales of others will be tending to lightness. Whomever recites during this month an ayat (verse) of the Holy Qur’an , will get the reward of reciting the whole Qur’an in other months.

O people! , the gates of Paradise remain open during this month. Pray to your Lord that they may not be closed for you. While the gates of Hell are closed , pray to your Lord that they never open for you. Satan has been chained , invoke your Lord not to let him dominate you.”

Ali ibn Talib (RAA) said: “I asked , ‘O messenger of Allah , what are the best deeds during this month’?” ‘He replied: ‘O Abu-Hassan , the best of deeds during this month is to be far from what Allah has forbidden’.”

Du’a Nasiri and Hadith Qudsi for April 7th halaqa

Alhamdulillah for our last session where we had a fruitful discussion on Surah Balad. InshaAllahu ta’ala we will implement all we learned from it in our lives striving to better live the attitude of a believer.

We also did the following hadith and du’a. I will post these up also on the blog. For those of you who have not yet done so, please do subscribe by email to the blog so that you get posts there even if I forget to add you to the mailing list. The site is

InshaAllah our next meeting will be on the 22nd at 7 pm. I will confirm the location closer to the date. Inshaallah we will do Surah 91, another hadith and recite again the du’a. Please do try to make it.

The du’a is very special. It is called Du’a Nasiri written by Imam Muhammed al-Dar’ii. He died in 1085, but this is Hijri not Gregorian, my mistake, I got it wrong yesterday. Many great things have been said about this prayer. I will copy some of it below. You will be interested to learn the French occupiers of Morocco were so afraid of it, that they took the extraordinary step of proscribing its recital during the occupation. Sh. Hamza translated this prayer from the Arabic a few years ago and it is available for purchase now. Alhamdulillah, a beautiful recitation by the renowned Fez singers from Morocco is available to listen online as well. InshaAllah next session, we will listen/join the recitation as we read the translation (attached). Recitation here or copy paste the link below in another browser window.

Here is a youtube video of the same du’a but recited in a different style. –

And we know that Allah answers the prayer of the oppressed. In fact, the prayer of the oppressed is so powerful we are afraid of being in any way oppressive to anyone, lest they make du’a against us!

Please do make this du’a whenever you can. Especially for our brothers and sisters in so many parts of the world, especially Libya, Yemen, Tunisia, Egypt, Algeria, Bahrain to name but a few. The Muslim Ummah is under great strife, internal and external and is in urgent need of good leaders, scholars, and strong Muslims. May Allah accept our prayer.

Here are some notes on why this prayer is so powerful –

The Power of this prayer of Imam Muhammad al-DarÏ lies in its simplicity, its purity, and its sincere supplication. It is essentially a plea to God that our transgressions be overlooked, that divine mercy be bestowed upon us, that social justice be restored in spite of us, that wrongs be righted, and that righteousness reign once again in our lands, so that the destitute may no longer be in need, the young may be educated, the animals’ purpose fulfilled, rain restored, and bounties poured forth.

It is a plea to be freed from the aggression of foreigners in lands over which they have no right—a plea much needed in our modern world, rampant as it is with invasions and territorial occupations. Ultimately, it asks not that our enemies be destroyed, but simply that their plots, and the harm they cause, be halted. Its essence is mercy, which in turn is the essence of the Messenger of God, Muhammad (saw): “And We have only sent you as a mercy to all the worlds.

Here is the hadith we covered yesterday

On the authority of Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet (peace be upon him) is that among the sayings he relates from his Lord (may He be glorified) is that He said:

O My servants, I have forbidden oppression for Myself and have made it forbidden amongst you, so do not oppress one another. O My servants, all of you are astray except for those I have guided, so seek guidance of Me and I shall guide you, O My servants, all of you are hungry except for those I have fed, so seek food of Me and I shall feed you. O My servants, all of you are naked except for those I have clothed, so seek clothing of Me and I shall clothe you. O My servants, you sin by night and by day, and I forgive all sins, so seek forgiveness of Me and I shall forgive you. O My servants, you will not attain harming Me so as to harm Me, and will not attain benefitting Me so as to benefit Me. O My servants, were the first of you and the last of you, the human of you and the jinn of you to be as pious as the most pious heart of any one man of you, that would not increase My kingdom in anything. O My servants, were the first of you and the last of you, the human of you and the jinn of you to be as wicked as the most wicked heart of any one man of you, that would not decrease My kingdom in anything. O My servants, were the first of you and the last of you, the human of you and the jinn of you to rise up in one place and make a request of Me, and were I to give everyone what he requested, that would not decrease what I have, any more that a needle decreases the sea if put into it. O My servants, it is but your deeds that I reckon up for you and then recompense you for, so let him finds good praise Allah and let him who finds other that blame no one but himself.

It was related by Muslim (also by at-Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah).

Hadith Qudsi we covered on Jan 27th 2011. Number 25

Hadith Qudsi 25

On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

“Allah (mighty and sublime be He) said:

Whosoever shows enmity to someone devoted to Me, I shall be at war with him. My servant draws not near to Me with anything more loved by Me than the religious duties I have enjoined upon him, and My servant continues to draw near to Me with supererogatory works so that I shall love him. When I love him I am his hearing with which he hears, his seeing with which he sees, his hand with which he strikes and his foot with which he walks. Were he to ask [something] of Me, I would surely give it to him, and were he to ask Me for refuge, I would surely grant him it. I do not hesitate about anything as much as I hesitate about [seizing] the soul of My faithful servant: he hates death and I hate hurting him.”
